Travel

Driving. Allentown is conveniently located at the intersection of two major routes through Pennsylvania; Routes I-78 and the north/south PA Turnpike (I-476). Additionally, Route I-80 lies just to the north and intersects the PA Turnpike, which also connects to the south with the Philadelphia area. For GPS directions to Muhlenberg College, use 2400 Chew Street, Allentown, PA 18104-5586.

Ride Shares. After you register, you’ll be invited to the WOS 2023 Slack Workspace, where there will be a channel for finding attendees who want to share a ride to/from the airport. 

Parking. Free parking is available on campus (see campus map, parking lots highlighted in pink) for those staying on campus, and those staying off campus. No parking permit is required. Handicap parking is in front of Seegers Union along the front circle drive.

Amtrak. Amtrak can get you via train into Philadelphia, and by bus into Allentown itself.

Food

There are many eating establishments in the Lehigh Valley. Here we list a number within walking distance, a short drive, and some of our favorites. Unless noted, all the following are reached by traveling east from campus on Liberty Street. Most are within a reasonable walking distance.

Tavern on Liberty. Easygoing standby featuring pub grub and an extensive craft beer selection in bottles and on tap. Dine-in/takeout. Right next to campus.

Jay’s Local. Breakfast and lunch. Right next to campus.

Syb’s West End Deli. Considered a great deli. Breakfast/lunch, dine-in/takeout. One block off campus.

Stooges Bar & Grill. Lunch and dinner, dine-in/takeout. Three blocks off campus.

Ringers Roost. Bar and grill offering a diverse American menu in a relaxed setting with sports-centric décor. Lunch/dinner, dine-in/takeout. Nine blocks off campus.

Wert’s Café. This busy, longtime eatery known for its signature burgers also serves other classic American bites. Lunch/dinner, dine-in/takeout. About 10 blocks off campus, just off Liberty Street.

Henry’s Salt of the Sea. Quaint, French-inspired seafood restaurant with a full bar also offering steak and chicken entrees. Dinner only, dine-in/takeout. Two blocks off Liberty Street, about nine blocks off campus.

Salvatore Ruffino’s. Considered by some locals to be the best pizzeria in town. Dine-in, takeout, and delivery. Nine or so blocks off campus; three blocks off of Liberty Street.

Wingstop. The name says it all. A bit of a long walk from campus, but they also offer delivery.

Youell’s Oyster House. Veteran eatery offering its seafood menu in a remodeled space that includes a rooftop garden. Dine in, lunch and dinner. Up-scale and very good. A short five-minute drive from campus.

TGI Fridays. About one mile SW of campus.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill. About one mile SW of campus.

Grocery StoreWeis Markets, about a mile west of campus.


Hotels

Most major chains are located within a few miles of Muhlenberg College. The four closest are to the southwest along Hamilton Blvd. Keep in mind that there is a large amusement park (Dorney Park) located near the closest hotels and availability might be limited. Hotels are listed in order of distance from the college.

Da Vinci Science Center. Good for all ages.

Allentown Farmers Market. Open Thursday–Saturday, six blocks east of campus

Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum. Open Wednesday–Saturday.

National Canal Museum and Hugh Moore Park. Canal boat rides, history. About 30 minutes east of Allentown

Lehigh Valley Zoo. About 30 minutes north of Allentown.

National Museum of Industrial History. About 30 minutes east of Allentown.

Historic Bethlehem. Many historical points of interest. About 30 minutes east of Allentown.

Jim Thorpe, PA. About 45 minutes north of Allentown. Founded in 1818 and originally known as Mauch Chunk, Jim Thorpe is now named after the “greatest athlete of all time.” Historical homes housing now house shops, dining, bed and breakfasts, museums, galleries and popular entertainment venues.
